A tribute to Louis Edmund Henschke (1919-1990), the fourth-generation grower of the Hill of Grace vineyard. His expertise as a vigneron has resulted in a legacy in the form of the famous vineyard being maintained using long-term organic principles. The Semillon is a reserve selection from 50 year-old vines, grown in the Henschke vineyard at Eden Valley.

Expert Reviews

Gleaming straw-green; an intense, pure, long and focused evocation of Semillon with lemon zest, lemon juice and lemongrass flavours on the bright, crisp and long palate. Will age superbly, however great its appeal right now. Rating 94 – Drink by 2025, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (FEB/2014)

Winery Tasting Notes

Pale straw with lime hues.

Aromas of fragrant clover blossom, lemon citrus and green apple are layered with hints of nashi pear, dried fennel and newly mown hay.

The focused palate shows zesty citrus and fresh stone-fruit characters with beautifully balanced fine acidity and texture for a long, crisp finish.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Henschke is one of the longest established family names in the Barossa and the Australian wine industry. Johann Christian Henschke first planted vines in Keyneton in 1861, producing his first commercial vintage in 1868.

The tradition of quality winemaking has passed down through the generations – today seeing Stephen Henschke and his wife, Prue, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively.

Awarded "International Red Winemaker of the Year" in 1996 at the London Wine Show, Stephen and Prue were in 2006, awarded Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine's "Winemaker of the Year" in recognition of winemaking excellence in both red and white wines. These Awards recognise the consistent and continuing success of this remarkable couple.

Prue has, for the last 18 years, explored and now employs both organic and biodynamic strategies to maximise the potential for the fruit from these unique vineyards to fully express their individual terroirs.
