Expert Reviews

Last year, I chased down a bottle for review. This year, rather than die wondering waiting for the distributor to come through, or more likely die of boredom at some interminable launch lunch, I simply went out and bought a bottle. Happy days!

Lilies, spice, bath salts, ripe lemons – almost to peach. There’s Big Flavour here, yet cool acid and chalkiness temper the fruit sweetness. Acidity feels a little choppy on the finish, and the length is good, but not great – though I do love the slaty/chalky exit. At present a lot of power and potential, but not quite hanging together. Strong release all up. Rating 93+, Drink 2014 - 2028 Gary Walsh, Wine Front (JUL/2013)

Pale straw-green; once the price leader in current vintage rieslings, but those days comprehensively behind it; this is elegant and well-crafted, but doesn't have more fruit intensity than its peers - indeed not quite as much. Why is an interesting question. Rating 93 - Drink by 2023 James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2015

Winery Tasting Notes

This Riesling is a full dry style, with lovely delicate floral aromatics and a hint of tropical fruit. Lemon-lime blossom on the nose flows onto the palate, showing trademark citrus flavours with a hint of spice.

The natural high acidity gives wonderful lift on the finish. The 2012 is a wine that is immediately approachable, but will also age really gracefully for many decades. It is a wine that will happily compare with other great Petaluma Rieslings, notably the 1980, 2002 and 2011 vintage.
