Certain years give an exceptionally high quality harvest which has the quality to express a particular style of the house. These years are marked by the seal of the vintage and give birth to the rare bottles of Bollinger La Grande Année that have the potential to age exceptionally.
- FRA - Champagne
This is comprehensively the best vintage since 1996, and a substantial quantity has been earmarked for Bollingers RD program. Over the course of several days, I tasted, nay drank it on three occasions, each time awed by its intense purity and focus. It has the highest percentage of chardonnay (40%) in any Grande Année, and you barely see the 8.5 g/l of dosage. Grapefruit pith, cherry and lemon intermingle with notes of toast and forest floor, and the wine has incredible line and length. Rating 97 - James Halliday, Weekend Australian (13/AUG/2011)
Winery Tasting Notes
Slightly pinkish, or old gold, which witnesses of the maturity of the wine and also of the wine making methods at Bollinger.
Rhubarb, stone fruits, toasty, fruits in alcohol (depending on the vintage), proof of a long ageing period in the barrel. Notes of exotic spices.
The bubble is very present but silky (proof of the lengthy ageing on lees). Body and length.
