Expert Reviews

"The RD (“recently disgorged”) is a Grand Annee that has matured in the Bollinger cellars for up to 20 years. This £150 wine (65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay) is sumptuous, full bodied, intense and with a superb palate of biscuit and yeast, vibrant acid, honey and citrus fruit." Decanter Fine Wine Encounter Masterclass (Feb/2009)

"An extension of La Grande Anee in that it is aged on lees for eight to 10 years. The wine is hand disgorged and every bottle checked individually. This is a stunning example of the best of Bollinger with its powerful and penetrating palate that lingers forever. " Rating 98 - Ray Jordan, West Australian (25/Oct/2008)

Winery Tasting Notes

Wine Background

Madame Bollinger first had the idea of offering recently disgorged cuvees in 1961 as part of her absolute commitment to making the best possible wines. Only the most promising of the Bollinger La Grande Annee vintages can hope to become R.D. These cuvees are given even more time in the cellar to encourage the slow evolution of aromas, as well as a redefinition of structure and a lingering finish. After disgorging, the wines have a very slight addition of dosage, revealing the most pure and profound truth of the wine, paradoxically combining an extraordinary freshness and an exceptional expression of secondary and tertiary aromas. The lively freshness amazes and enchants, while the aromatic expression intrigues.

Cellaring Potential

These wines improve with age and may be enjoyed immediately or allowed to continue ageing after disgorgement, reserving additional characteristics for the future.

Family owned and controlled, Bollinger is dedicated to producing a consistent and distinctive style of Champagne. Bollinger’s wines are predicated by their unique vineyards: rich, assertive and with great power yet always with finesse.

To reinforce its commitment to style and quality, Bollinger launched its Charter of Ethics and Quality in 1992 (reinforced by its Ten Commitments), which guarantees the continuity of the policy of the House for the years to come.

In 2006 the prestigious French wine magazine La Revue du Vin de France surveyed the most significant group of sommeliers and wine writers for them to nominate the top 50 Champagne Houses which would be regarded as the most responsible for the greatness of Champagne as a unique wine region. Bollinger was selected as the number one House by this group.
