Expert Reviews

Great now but will be even better as it ages. Fire and spice on the nose and appealing fleshiness and texture to the palate which is overflowing with animated fruit flavours. Very Australian!” Winestate Magazine, Special Edition 2010

Sandalford is one of the most improved West Australian wineries since the Prendiville family took it over, and this statuesque red is destined to be a Margaret River classic. It’s fresh and youthful, deeply coloured, concentrated in flavour and aroma and tightly structured. It is redolent with peppermint and blackcurrant, while firm but ripe tannins close out the finish. It needs time, will be at its best in 2010.Huon Hooke, Gourmet Wine (AUG/2008)

Shows the additional oak impact of 24 months in new French oak, but also the superior fruit, classic cassis and blackcurrant fruit plus fully integrated tannins. Rating: 96 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2009

This is a very elegant wine, which is beautifully balanced. It has tight flavours, fine tannins and great length. National Liquor News (JUN/2009)

Sandalford’s flagship Prendiville cabernet deserves its place in this company: aromatic, vibrant and complex with velvety texture, it’s capable of giving pleasure in the short term yet will age gracefully.Peter Forrestal and Andrew Bennett, The STM Guide: Hotdrops, The Sunday Times (15/MAR/2009)

Dark mint chocolate and blueberry nose. Full flavoured with fruits-of-the-forest character, overlaid with mocha and mint. Highly recommended - Decanter Magazine (FEB/2009)

This is top of the tree for Sandalford, introduced a few years ago. Wonderfully poised and elegant expression cabernet from this original planting in the early seventies. Silky smooth and seamless structured with fine tannins and fragrant oak supporting the fruit. The palate has a more medium weight but there is extraordinary depth and power sitting behind it. Great wine. Rating 96 - Ray Jordan, Ray Jordan Wine Guide 2009

Huge minty/menthol lift to the nose typical of the region. The palate is luscious but not cloying = ripe and juicy but in balance.” Winestate Magazine, (JUL-AUG/2008)

Sandalford's flagship wine, the Prendiville Cabernet Sauvigon, had a fair bit to live up to this year. The rest of the Sandalford range had moved up a gear, with the mid priced estate Cabernet blend in particular impressing with its balance and restraint. Could this wine step up to the plate and justify such an ambitious price tag? You betcha. It is the quintessential Margaret River Cabernet, dusty and gravelly, with delicate cedar and blackcurrant aroma's. Flavours are medium weight, with concentrated, savoury cassis and chocolate dominating. Beautiful line and length, lovely linear shape to this wine, the most miniscule tannins rounding off the finish in a dry, composed manner, with impressive persistence. A wine of superb balance and one that should mark Sandalford's re-entry to the upper echelons of Margaret River wine royalty. Grant Dodd, The Winning Pro (AUG/2008)

On the sheer weight of greatness at the pointy end, Margaret River remains on the top of the Aussie Cabernet game, and it’s moving ever upward. This is the first release of Prendiville to hit the upper echelons. There is an interplay of cassis, blackcurrants, leaf and spice here that guarantees it a place in the ranks of greatness.” WBM 100 Magazine (JUN/2008)

Made from old vines at Wilyabrup, this is a Margaret River classic, very fresh and young, deeply concentrated and tight, redolent of peppermint and blackcurrant with firm but ripe tannins closing out the finish. Sydney Morning Herald, Media Monitors - Good Living section(17/JUN/2008)

Cabernet grapes grown at Wilyabrup, the quality heartland of Margaret River, form the raw material for Sandalford’s top red. It’s powerful, very concentrated and complex, smelling of black fruits, violets, mint, sweet leather and spicy French oak. The palate is dense and muscular.” Ralph Kyte-Powell , Age Epicure (15/APR/2008)

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Dark cherry with an unmistakable magenta hue.

Nose

In what is atypical for Margaret River this wine has almost a floral nose reminiscent of perfumed violets. The hallmark Cabernet character of blackcurrant is certainly present as is the cedary and wet forest floor notes derived from both fruit and French oak.

Palate

There is an immediate wash of sweet brambly fruit flavours in the mouth perfectly weighted with silk-like tannins and balancing acidity. The oak nuances are well balanced in respect of fruit and the finish is one of elegance and structure. A harmless deposit may form in the bottle during this time and decanting is recommended prior to serving.

Cellaring Potential

Whilst a remarkable wine now, the Prendiville is certainly a wine which will benefit from careful cellar maturation for 15 years or more.

Red 5 Star Winery James Halliday, Austarlian Wine Companion 2011 Edition

"RED 5 STAR WINERY – Sandalford is an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity.”

Australia’s most pre-eminent wine critic, James Halliday, awards Sandalford Wines the very coveted RED 5 star rating in the Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition.

Sandalford Wines was established in 1840 and is today privately owned by the Prendiville family.

In the early 1970’s Sandalford was one of the pioneers in establishing vineyards in the Margaret River planting 96 hectares in the sub region of Wilyabrup. It is this old, dry grown vineyard that is the source of the Prendiville Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the Estate Reserve range of wines. These wines under the winemaking expertise of Paul Boulden are superb examples of Margaret River at its best, winning praise from notable wine writers and a series of trophies and gold medals at both national and international wine shows.

A new addition to the Sandalford portfolio is the Margaret River Range of wines positioned at the “midprice point” of today’s premium market. It is the fastest growing segment of the wine market and with Sandalford’s world class resources in Margaret River, this range has been developed to tap into this consumer trend. The wines are sourced from a combination of the Sandalford Estate and other premium vineyards in the Margaret River with wine styles reflecting current consumer tastes for vibrant, up front varietal flavours.
