Expert Reviews

"Good colour; yet another Coonawarra Cabernet to underline the quality of the vintage, the heat having passed before the cabernet was ripe; has delicious red and blackcurrant fruit, supple tannins and subtle oak." 90 Points- James Halliday, Australiam Wine Companion (01/03/2010)

"If you are looking for a reasonably priced drink-now cabernet youd need to look a long way before finding one as good as the 08 Katnook Founders. Bright marzipan and blueberry and mulberry fruits leap from the glass. Better still, its not been marred by any overt oak influence yet the tannins are still typically dry and grippy... " Fergus McGhie, Canberra Times, (05/05/2010)

"Marks something of a return to form after the tough previous vintages. Ripe dark plum and mulberry flavours with hints of mint. Its more in the fruit-driven spectrum with excellent subtle oak adding to the ripe tannins in support. Nice drinking in the short term. "89 Points – Ray Jordan, West Australian (20/05/2010)

"Wayne Stehbens, captured cabernets cassis-like varietal flavour and firm finish in Founders Block... the focus is on bright fruit flavours for current drinking." Chris Shanahan, Canberra Times (30/05/2010)

"Richly flavoured, its the Coonawarra winerys top seller." John Fordham, Sunday Telegraph (18/07/2010)

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep plum red with purple tinges.

Enjoy the abundant and appealing dark berry fruits on the nose with ripe plum and hints of dusty mulberry. Subtle oak notes of vanillin complement the charming varietal aromatics.

The generously structured palate shows rich fruit and light oak flavours. Ripe dark berries, plum and dusty mulberry with a hint of regional mint character are highlights within the lush palate. Fine grained and soft tannins add to the lingering and attractive fruit, all perfectly balanced for a pleasurable drinking experience.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Katnook Estate is one of the premier wineries in Australia's pre eminent red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate wines are made from select grapes grown in distinguished sites within the company's 330 hectares of Coonawarra vineyards.

Since 1980,  senior winemaker, Wayne Stehbens has crafted Katnook Estate wines and more recently, the iconic Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz.

The Coonawarra wine region, Australia's "other red centre" is recognised world wide as producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as stylish Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Currently, over 5500 hectares are under vine in Coonawarra - with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz accounting for 80% of plantings. 25% of wine produced in Coonawarra is exported.

The wines are shaped by the extraordinary terroir of Coonawarra - where the fabled Terra Rossa soils and cool maritime climate create the perfect wine grape growing environment.

Coonawarra's is famous for its prized Terra Rossa ( "Red Earth") soil. This rich, friable red loam vary from a few centimetres to a metre in depth and lie over a thin layer of calcareous matter, which in turn overlays a deep stratum of limestone. The cigar-shaped strip of Terra Rossa soil is only 12 km long and 2 km wide.

Coonawarra appears completely flat, but in fact the red soil is situated on a slight but all important limestone ridge. The Terra Rossa soils are considered the best in the world for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Coonawarra is a cool wine region, with similar climatic conditions to Bordeaux, France. Both areas experience long but cool hours of sunshine during grape ripening - encouraging intense flavours balanced by good, natural acid.
