This wine offers terrific value from the heart of Coonawarra. Laden with raspberry and plum fruits with pepper and spice overtones, the gentle oak flavours of sweet vanilla add complexity and depth.

"A good all rounder"
I like Coonawarra Shiraz in the way it has nothing to prove, Cabernet of the region is the show pony and this sits in the wings without being too demonstrative. I like this Katnook wine, I think it’s attractive, a good all rounder. On the nose it shows inky black fruits, perhaps some leather strap, licorice and charry oak. The palate has a cascading texture of silky plum, soft tannins, some vanillin oak making for a harmonious and balanced wine for the price. Patrick Haddock, Wining Pom (30/SEP/2011)
Deep colour. Intense fragrant campari/ red cherry/ blueberry - smoky incense aromas. Medium weighted wine with red cherry/ campari/ chinotto-like flavours, slinky loose knit tannins. Finishes chalky firm and long. Andrew Caillard MW, Langton's website (AUG/2011 )
This has a dark berry bouquet with a background of spicy oak. Supple mouth-feel is nicely textured with raspberry-like fruit finishing with savoury characters. Just 30 per cent spent nine months in oak. Well made. Good with hamburgers. Jeff Collerson, Sydney Daily Telegraph (3/SEP/2011)
From Katnook's entry label and an entree to what consumers can expect from the estate and premium releases.Top value, bright black and red berry fruit, spice and peppery characters lovely balance, supple tannins. Kerry Skinner, Illawarra Mercury (15/OCT/2011)
Shiraz was grown in Coonawarra many decades before cabernet became the main red identified with the cool region. One of the oldest wineries there releases its Founder's Block range at an encouraging price. The Katnook Estate Founder's Block Shiraz 2009 is a vibrant red with good color, a fragrant bouquet and a medium bodied palate of ripe fruit well integrated with oak . Winery Tasting Notes
Deep plum with light purple tinges.
The aroma features vibrant, ripe dark berry fruit including blueberry and boysenberry. Hints of lifted violet are complemented with vibrant nutmeg and cinnamon spice notes. All the wonderful fruit characters are backed by subtle dark chocolate, vanilla and caramel oak maturation tones.
The palate is generous, rich and rounded with ample ripe juicy berry fruit flavours. The tannins are supple and seductive. Subtle and harmonious coffee and chocolate oak complements the fruit. Spicy notes lend depth and complexity to the palate.
Perfect with Moroccan-spiced lamb backstrap cooked on the barbeque, served with a Grecian salad and drizzled with lemon and paprika infused yoghurt dressing.
