Expert Reviews

Katnook Estate cabernet is matured for 22 months in both French and American oak - but this 2008 version is far more fruit driven than many of its past releases. It's a sea of medium-weight blackcurrant. You'd almost call this a "Claret style", though it's fresher and bolder and indeed fruitier than that. Toast, mulberries, dark olives too. A good tug of tannin. Noticeable persistence. Excellent style of wine. Rated 94/ Drink : 2014 - 2022 Campbell Mattinson, Winefront Monthly (22/OCT/2010)

Sweetly fuited and lightly oaked bouquet of bramble, baked blackberries and plums underpinned by suggestions of currants and raisins. Finely structured and elegant, with a fine spine of crunchy tannins supporting its brambly presence of cassis, blackberries and plums. Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2011

When the influential Langton's Classification of Australian Wines was released last month the Katnook Estate cabernet was rewarded with a "distinguished" rating. This new release is certainly distinguished and classy, matured in quality oak for 22 months, it's seamless and poised, lashings of black berry fruit, chocolate and a hint of mint silky smooth tannins. Kerry Skinner, Illawarra Mercury (04/NOV/2010)

Katnook's senior winemaker Wayne Steh bens believes his 2008 Coonawarra reds are comparable to those of the great 1998 vintage and this classy cabernet sauvignon supports that view. It is deep purple in the glass and has cassis and herb aromas. Profound blackcurrant flavour comes through on the front of the palate and cherry, dark chocolate and mint fruit characters integrate with spicy oak on the middle palate. Smooth dusty tannins show at the finish. DRINK WITH: Veal Marengo, pork fillet with herbed sweet potato mash or rack of lamb with rosemary stuffing and mint sauce. AGEING: 10 years. John Lewis, New Castle Herald (01/DEC/2010)

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep, very dark plum with purple tinged edges.

Aroma

A complex array of varietal fruit and sweet oak maturation aromas. Ripe blackcurrant, mulberry and a hint of mint are combined with sweet toasty, chocolaty oak maturation tones.

Palate

The palate has generous ripe fruit flavours of dark berries, mulberry and black currant. Oak highlights of cedar, toast and subtle vanilla complement the fruit. The palate shows richness and excellent fruit weight with fine mouth coating tannins and a lingering finish.

Cellaring Potential

We suggest cellaring for 8 to 12 years.

Food Matching

A beef rib-eye steak served with roasted potato gratin and finished with a richly seasoned gravy is an ideal accompaniment to this regal variety, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Winemaking Notes

The wine was matured for approximately22 months in 225 litre oak barrels. 15% of the barrels were new French Barriques with the balance a mix of previously filled French and American oak.

Vintage Condition

2008 Coonawarra vintage is remembered not only for seasonal variability including the extreme heat wave during March which initiated an early start to harvest, but the remarkably high maturities, colour and tannin of the fruit. These attributes in the wines have since gained high praise and they continue to grow in stature.

The Cabernet Sauvignon wines show great intensity, rich ripe flavours and fine tannins.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Katnook Estate is one of the premier wineries in Australia's pre eminent red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate wines are made from select grapes grown in distinguished sites within the company's 330 hectares of Coonawarra vineyards.

Since 1980,  senior winemaker, Wayne Stehbens has crafted Katnook Estate wines and more recently, the iconic Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz.

The Coonawarra wine region, Australia's "other red centre" is recognised world wide as producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as stylish Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Currently, over 5500 hectares are under vine in Coonawarra - with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz accounting for 80% of plantings. 25% of wine produced in Coonawarra is exported.

The wines are shaped by the extraordinary terroir of Coonawarra - where the fabled Terra Rossa soils and cool maritime climate create the perfect wine grape growing environment.

Soil

Coonawarra's is famous for its prized Terra Rossa ( "Red Earth") soil. This rich, friable red loam vary from a few centimetres to a metre in depth and lie over a thin layer of calcareous matter, which in turn overlays a deep stratum of limestone. The cigar-shaped strip of Terra Rossa soil is only 12 km long and 2 km wide.

Coonawarra appears completely flat, but in fact the red soil is situated on a slight but all important limestone ridge. The Terra Rossa soils are considered the best in the world for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Climate

Coonawarra is a cool wine region, with similar climatic conditions to Bordeaux, France. Both areas experience long but cool hours of sunshine during grape ripening - encouraging intense flavours balanced by good, natural acid.
