Expert Reviews

Dense intense cherry crimson colour. Fantastic lift on the nose, concentrated black plum, loganberry, chocolate and menthol with pronounced cigar box aromas. Richly textured in the mouth, massive concentration of fruit with nicely integrated cedary oak, a hefty whack of tannin is needed to support the lavish fruit weight, the palate has depth and viscosity, the finish is lengthy and layered with savory, peppery nuances. Best of Class Gold Medal London International Wine and Spirit Competition , www.iwsc.net(OCT/2009)

Dense colour; the rich bouquet of black fruits and quality oak is replicated on the palate, which is stylish and intense, extract and alcohol perfectly balanced. To 2025. Rating 95.James Halliday, Australian Wine Compendium 2010

Katnook's flagship "Prodigy" Shiraz 2006 vintage is simply great. Pepper and plums on the nose, with good length. A classy effort The Grape Observer(7/DEC/2010)

Sensational stuff. From a quality Coonawarra vintage and a gold medal winner at this year's London International and Spirit Show. It's rich and opulent with layers of plum and black berry fruit, licorice, spice and peppery characters, super oak and velvet smooth tannins Kerry Skinner, Illawarra Mercury(14/NOV/2009)

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep, dark plum red with purple hues.

A rich and complex array of fruit, oak and subtle maturation aromas. Attractive ripe raspberry and plum fruit aromas with sweet anise and licorice spice tones. Sweet vanillin and cedary oak with subtle mocha adds fine complexity to the fruit aromas.

A sumptuous palate structure, richly layered with ripe fruit seamlessly combines the crafted oak and maturation flavours. Ripe raspberry and plum fruit with sweet anise and licorice spices are complemented with lingering varietal pepper flavours. Soft and fine persistent tannins are in harmony with the palate structure.

Cellaring Potential

Suggested cellaring is medium to long term, 10-20 years.

Food Matching

The rich flavours of Prodigy are perfectly suited to a pepper crusted lamb rack served on ratatouille and horseradish mash.

Vintage Conditions

2006 Coonawarra vintage will be remembered as being very early and for the very low yields, indeed Shiraz was harvested about 10 days earlier than usual.

Slightly above average temperatures prevailed during summer and extended into the ripening period. The ideal conditions produced fruit that was disease free and in excellent condition.

The season’s Shiraz wines display outstanding varietal flavour, good palate structures with subtle richness, excellent colour and fine soft tannins.

Prodigy is made from grapes harvested off a small vineyard site that has consistently produced fruit of outstanding depth of fruit flavour and colour.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Katnook Estate is one of the premier wineries in Australia's pre eminent red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate wines are made from select grapes grown in distinguished sites within the company's 330 hectares of Coonawarra vineyards.

Since 1980,  senior winemaker, Wayne Stehbens has crafted Katnook Estate wines and more recently, the iconic Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz.

The Coonawarra wine region, Australia's "other red centre" is recognised world wide as producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as stylish Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Currently, over 5500 hectares are under vine in Coonawarra - with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz accounting for 80% of plantings. 25% of wine produced in Coonawarra is exported.

The wines are shaped by the extraordinary terroir of Coonawarra - where the fabled Terra Rossa soils and cool maritime climate create the perfect wine grape growing environment.

Coonawarra's is famous for its prized Terra Rossa ( "Red Earth") soil. This rich, friable red loam vary from a few centimetres to a metre in depth and lie over a thin layer of calcareous matter, which in turn overlays a deep stratum of limestone. The cigar-shaped strip of Terra Rossa soil is only 12 km long and 2 km wide.

Coonawarra appears completely flat, but in fact the red soil is situated on a slight but all important limestone ridge. The Terra Rossa soils are considered the best in the world for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Coonawarra is a cool wine region, with similar climatic conditions to Bordeaux, France. Both areas experience long but cool hours of sunshine during grape ripening - encouraging intense flavours balanced by good, natural acid.
