Expert Reviews

This is Katnook's monster flagship Cabernet. Its quality is rarely in dispute. Layers of oak-derived flavour with notes of toast and coffee, cloves and spices. There's some nougat and coconut-like sweetness-that's the Odyssey style; big oak and big fruit flavour. The fruit doesn't disappoint; it's minty and aniseedy, curranty and full bodied. It's a remarkably smooth and supple red, like it's been massaged and goroomed to be immaculately smooth and supple. In all, you'd call it rich, balanced and persistent. Drink 2011-2017. 94 points Campbell Mattinson, The Big Red Wine Book, 2010/2011

An intense wine with tremendous depth of flavour despite modest alcohol; blackcurrant and blackberry fruit resonates through the palate, which has absorbed its lengthy stay in French oak; the tannins, too are balanced. To 2025. Listed in the "Best of the Best Cabernet Sauvignons. Rating 96 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2010

Cedary mocha nose with a slight eucalyptus edge. Weet, menthol fruit palate with mouth-puckering tannins and warming alcohol. Rating 4 stars - Winestate Magazine (FEB/2010)

Intensely rich and concentrated, with cedar and blackcurrant flavours. Elegant and harmonious, with the fruit powerful enough to match the oak and tannin. Peter Forrestal, Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine, June/July 2010)

Clean, juicy, ripe, solid fruit. Plenty and fresh. Dusty chocolate and great length. Award Winner - International Wine Competition 2010 (NOV/2010)

Winery Tasting Notes

Dark plum red with purple-red hints.

Shows a rich and complex array of ripe fruit and oak maturation aromas. Dusty mulberry, dark berry and ripe plum are laced with sweet vanilla bean, subtle smoky and roasted mocha oak aromas.

An intricately layered palate structure with ripe fruit seamlessly combining the fine barrel maturation flavours. Ripe dark berries, hints of dusty mulberry and spicy plum are apparent with subtle vanilla, mocha and chocolate oak flavours richly interwoven. Fine grained, slightly chalky tannins complement the lingering flavours.

Food Matching

The intense flavours of Odyssey are ideally accompanied by full-flavoured dishes such as baked rump of beef or roasted pheasant, served with rich reductions.

Cellaring Potential

Suggested cellaring is medium to long term, 10-20 years.

Vintage Condition

The 2005 Coonawarra vintage will be noted for producing fruit in excellent condition with optimal ripeness.

The season was close to ideal with below average summer temperatures and mild dry conditions through véraison extending well into April, allowing the fruit to develop rich ripe flavours.

Combined with slightly below average yields, the season has produced Cabernet Sauvignon wines with excellent colour and abundant ripe fruit. They exhibit generous flavours and substantial palate structures with fine lingering tannins.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Katnook Estate is one of the premier wineries in Australia's pre eminent red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate wines are made from select grapes grown in distinguished sites within the company's 330 hectares of Coonawarra vineyards.

Since 1980,  senior winemaker, Wayne Stehbens has crafted Katnook Estate wines and more recently, the iconic Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz.

The Coonawarra wine region, Australia's "other red centre" is recognised world wide as producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as stylish Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Currently, over 5500 hectares are under vine in Coonawarra - with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz accounting for 80% of plantings. 25% of wine produced in Coonawarra is exported.

The wines are shaped by the extraordinary terroir of Coonawarra - where the fabled Terra Rossa soils and cool maritime climate create the perfect wine grape growing environment.

Coonawarra's is famous for its prized Terra Rossa ( "Red Earth") soil. This rich, friable red loam vary from a few centimetres to a metre in depth and lie over a thin layer of calcareous matter, which in turn overlays a deep stratum of limestone. The cigar-shaped strip of Terra Rossa soil is only 12 km long and 2 km wide.

Coonawarra appears completely flat, but in fact the red soil is situated on a slight but all important limestone ridge. The Terra Rossa soils are considered the best in the world for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Coonawarra is a cool wine region, with similar climatic conditions to Bordeaux, France. Both areas experience long but cool hours of sunshine during grape ripening - encouraging intense flavours balanced by good, natural acid.
