Expert Reviews

The impact of 22 months in 20% new French and 80% second-use American oak barrels is immediately obvious, although there is a substantial well of plum and blackberry fruit to provide a balanced counter to that oak; the tannins are fine and ripe, and the wine has a long finish. Cellar to 2022. Rating 94 points. Five glass rating - outstanding. James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion2011

Lightly oaked wine with a lifted, peppery nose and sweet ripe flavours on a powerful palate. Winestate Magazine(NOV-DEC/2010)

Elegant, cool-climate characters and soft spice. Soft, lingering tannins and persistent length - a wine with finesse and style.Katrina Holden, Drinks (DEC/2010)

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Very deep dark plum reds with bright purple tinges.

Aroma

Attractive raspberry fruit with subtle sweet oak maturation notes to highlight the aromas. Light licorice, spicy plum and black pepper combine with vanillin oak and chocolaty maturation flavours to add intricate levels of complexity.

Palate

An elaborate presentation of flavours richly layered with ripe fruit and subtle oak. Attractive raspberry and plum fruit with underlying sweet spices are combined with sweet vanilla and chocolaty oak maturation notes. Fine grained lingering tannins add to the long and persistent savoury fruit flavours.

Food Matching

Rare backstrap of lamb with rich blood plum and red grape jus served on bed of gratin potato with steamed green and yellow beans and crisp pumpkin fries.

Winemaking Notes

Matured for approximately 22 months in a combination of oak – 225 litre Barriques and 300 litre Hogsheads. 20% of the Barriques were new and predominantly French with the balance of wine maturing in older and predominantly American barrels.

Vintage Condition

2007 vintage will be remembered for the severe spring frosts that devastated unprotected vineyards across Coonawarra and reduced crops to less than 25% of usual yield.

Ideal warm and dry conditions through veraison, combined with these lower yields, contributed to an earlier than usual commencement to the harvest of Shiraz.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Katnook Estate is one of the premier wineries in Australia's pre eminent red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate wines are made from select grapes grown in distinguished sites within the company's 330 hectares of Coonawarra vineyards.

Since 1980,  senior winemaker, Wayne Stehbens has crafted Katnook Estate wines and more recently, the iconic Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz.

The Coonawarra wine region, Australia's "other red centre" is recognised world wide as producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as stylish Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Currently, over 5500 hectares are under vine in Coonawarra - with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz accounting for 80% of plantings. 25% of wine produced in Coonawarra is exported.

The wines are shaped by the extraordinary terroir of Coonawarra - where the fabled Terra Rossa soils and cool maritime climate create the perfect wine grape growing environment.

Soil

Coonawarra's is famous for its prized Terra Rossa ( "Red Earth") soil. This rich, friable red loam vary from a few centimetres to a metre in depth and lie over a thin layer of calcareous matter, which in turn overlays a deep stratum of limestone. The cigar-shaped strip of Terra Rossa soil is only 12 km long and 2 km wide.

Coonawarra appears completely flat, but in fact the red soil is situated on a slight but all important limestone ridge. The Terra Rossa soils are considered the best in the world for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Climate

Coonawarra is a cool wine region, with similar climatic conditions to Bordeaux, France. Both areas experience long but cool hours of sunshine during grape ripening - encouraging intense flavours balanced by good, natural acid.
