Expert Reviews

A long, but wine-stained, cork had no adverse impact on the purple-red colour, nor the intense regional manifestation of the black fruits and bitter chocolate aromas and flavours; has very good length and intensity, French oak judged to perfection. With a screwcap, this wine would live for 40-plus years.Rating 95 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011 (01/AUG/2011)

It was a hard wine to coax forward but it got there in the end. This year’s Tatachilla Foundation Shiraz is a tight, tannic beast. It seems pongy at first but given air, I came to love the smell of this. It’s earthen and tobacco-like with notes of fresh, cedary sawdust and rich, blueberried fruit. In the mouth it’s velvety, strongly-flavoured, inky and quite dramatically tannic. It’s floral too, perhaps a touch gamey, and really big on fruit flavour. Needs a couple of years for it to show itself properly.Rating 92+ Campbell Mattinson www.winefront.com.au (11/MAR/2010)

There is quite prominent oak on the nose, but the wine is very flavoursome and attractive. Smoky, toasty barrel-fermented aromas; rich, full body and abundant smooth tannins. Clean finish and excellent depth of flavour. Rating 90 - Huon Hooke, Australian Gourmet Traveller, (01/NOV/2010)

Great colour. Hugely concentrated ripe blackberry aromas with an edge of spicy oak. Beautifully balanced palate full of bright, peppery varietal fruit. A touch hot on the finish. 4.5 Stars - Winestate (01/FEB/2011)

Shows some leathery development, with rich blackberry fruit. Balanced firm tannins frame a fresh long palate. Lester Jesberg, Winewise (01/JUL/2010)

Winemaker Fanchon Ferrandi has stamped her class all over this super shiraz. Matured for 18 months in new and used French oak its bold and beautiful with a long life in front of it. Layers of intense plum, red and black berry fruit, integrated pepper and spice, velvet smooth tannins.Kery Skinner, Illawarra Mercury (26/JUL/2010)

Food Matching

Open one hour prior and serve at room temperature. The ideal accompaniment to full flavoured dishes such as braised confit or Faison.

Cellaring Potential

This wine has superb ageing potential if carefully cellared.

Vintage Condition

A very good quality vintage in 2005; slightly early with a quick ripening period overall, especially for Shiraz.

The vintage was very dry with very little rainfall in February and very few days of rain in March. Mild conditions overall with temperatures rarely going over 25 degrees. The nights were cool, which allowed picking at optimum flavour development in the berry.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Tatachilla has been a part of McLaren Vale since vines were first planted over 100 years ago. Today the bright patchwork of olive groves, avocado orchards and rows of vines bordered by the South Australian coast impart a Mediterranean flavour to this evolving region.

Established in 1903, Tatachilla’s commitment to McLaren Vale has remained strong throughout the years. Its vineyards are scattered amongst the sloping hills and tapered basin of McLaren Vale, with fruit for Tatachilla’s wines sourced from key McLaren Vale subregions: Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale North & South and Clarendon.

Tatachilla’s own Clarendon Vineyard is the heart of Tatachilla, and the basis for our finest expressions of McLaren Vale wine.

Tatachilla’s wines evoke classic McLaren Vale characteristics blended with contemporary Mediterranean cues. The wines reflect the true character of the grapes, balancing a healthy respect for the vineyard with a light touch in the winery.
