Expert Reviews

"A Gewurz, Pinot Gris and Riesling combo that , for the first time, is exactly bang on…the Riesling controls the Gewurz’s input, taming its peachiness such that there is no fat or exotic fruit on show, just stunningly ‘green’ Gewurz notes. Pinot Gris adds no flab either, just fruit and the result is perfect." - Matthew Jukes & Tyson Stelzer, Taste Food & Wine 2009

91 PTS - "There is an emerging Australian interest in blending the trio of Alsatian white grapes together and delivering a balanced, flavoursome wine with some richness, like this. The trio are gewürztraminer, riesling and pinot gris.. and this blend is known in Alsace as an ‘Edelswicker’ or field blend. Lovely lift from the precocious aromatic traminer, here, lychee and gentle spicy edges, the Riesling contributing lime citrus fruits and the pinot gris layering some added texture through the sides. They’ve balanced this up neatly and it’ll make top summer drinking with or without food around." - Nick Stock, Adelaide Review, Feb 2009

4 Stars - "An unusual Alsace-inspired combition of Clare Valley gewürztraminer, riesling and pinot gris, this is a rich and aromatic white wine of some complexity. Notes of musk, pear, cinmon and exotic fruits mark the nose, and it tastes round and satisfying with a trace of sweetness counterpointed by zesty acidity. (13.5% alcohol; screw cap) Ageing? No. Food ideas Orion quiche; washed rind cheese.” - Ralph Kyte-Powell, Epicure - The AGE, Feb 2009

Vintage: Mostly due to an unrelenting 15 day heatwave in early March, the 2008 vintage will be remembered as one of the warmest on record. However, this label is not justified for our growing season as all Knappstein’s fruit was picked prior to this heatwave, one month earlier than average. Ripening conditions through January and February were ideal, with clear skies and cool nights ensuring maximum preservation and accumulation of delicate Clare Valley aromatics and texture. Insistent drought conditions guaranteed low yields resulting in wines which show great generosity and intensity while maintaining wonderful Clare Valley style and elegance.

Vineyard: The high-altitude Clare vineyard allows the Gewürztraminer to maintain its acid structure as it slowly ripens. The old dry grown vines from the Watervale vineyard adds to the length of flavour and intensity. Knappstein’s philosophy is simply to produce the best of Clare Valley handcrafted wines. Our commitment to this philosophy is our ability to grow the finest and most natural fruit form our distinct vineyards and take a minimal intervention approach. This allows us to achieve the purest expression of the fruit into the bottle.
