A unique blend showcasing aromatic lychees on the nose, a spicy and generous wine. This wine was inspired by the French region of Alsace, home to the three varieties and blending which has been going on for centuries. Generous lychee and tropical fruits from the Gewurtraminer, natural acidity and lingering flavours from the Riesling with mid-palate fruit and textural complexity from the Pinot Gris combine to create an intriguing yet very approachable wine.

Expert Reviews

94 PTS - "Gently perfumed blossom and spice leads into a tightly focused palate; lime and lemon juice flavours run through the long finish; delicious wine." - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010

"This will, believe me, develop some wonderful, complex, toasty flavours if you leave it in a cool dark place for a few years. If, that is, you can resist its lime-juicy charms for that long." - Max Allen, Australian Gourmet Traveller, April 2009

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2008 Knappstein Hand Picked Riesling shows lifted citrus fruit aromas with distinct floral notes, a signature of the parcels of fruit grown in the Watervale district of Clare. Fresh lemon and lime fruit flavours are framed by the wine's classic Clare Valley mineral structure. Knappstein's commitment to hand picking produces a delicate wine displaying excellent purity of flavours and textures.VINTAGE: Mostly due to an unrelenting 15 day heatwave in early March, the 2008 vintage will be remembered as one of the warmest on record. However, this label is not justified for our growing season as all Knappstein’s fruit was picked prior to this heatwave, one month earlier than average. Ripening conditions through January and February were ideal, with clear skies and cool nights ensuring maximum preservation and accumulation of delicate Clare Valley aromatics and texture. Insistent drought conditions guaranteed low yields resulting in wines which show great generosity and intensity while maintaining wonderful Clare Valley style and elegance.

VINEYARD: The fruit comes from our Ackland Vineyard in Watervale and three vineyards on more elevated slate vineyards futher north towards the town of Clare. Knappstein’s philosophy is simply to produce the best of Clare Valley handcrafted wines. Our commitment to this philosophy means that we adhere to a minimal intervention approach with our winemaking and viticulture, the goal always to nurture the finest fruit from our distinctive

vineyards. This allows us to achieve the purest expression of the fruit into the bottle.

WINEMAKING: The wine was made with minimal intervention to preserve fruit purity. The fruit was hand picked, gently crushed with only the best free-run juice used. It was then cold settled and fermented with neutral yeast at cool temperature to dryness. The wine was cold settled prior to filtration and bottling. CELLARING: Fantastic drinking now, this wine will reward ageing for up to six years.
