Ripe plum and cherry flavours dominate Smithbrook's Merlot grapes. Elegant but rich, the expression of dense, savoury tannins is only found in the very best examples of this variety.

Winery Tasting Notes

Savoury satsuma plum cake, with hints of black olive and strong earthy notes are balanced by sweeter blackcurrant flavours whilst maintaining the intrinsic savoury tannin structure of the region.

The originally managed vineyard is situated on idealistic soils of gravely loam over clay. An outstanding growing season in Pemberton for all red varieties in particular Merlot. Warm dry ripening conditions created perfect flavour, colou and tannin development.

Winemaking Notes

The Merlot variety always performs well in Permberton. A majority of the Merlot has had extended post fermentation skin contact, for up to 32 days, to facilitate a softening of tannins and development of juicer fruit characteristics. A small addition of the sister variety Cabernet Franc (13%) complete a mouth filling flavoursome wine which was matured in French and American oak for 16 months.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The Smithbrook vineyard is located amongst majestic “tall trees” on a pristine hill in the Pemberton wine region in the south west corner of Western Australia.

Planted in the late 1980s, the vineyard represents the most significant mature vineyard in the region. The warm Indian Ocean to the West and the cool Southern Ocean to the south create a maritime climate.

Smithbrook focuses on two key varietals - Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot, identified as the best varieties for this region.

Smithbrook has a natural, sustainable approach to managing the vineyard; low-yielding dry grown vines, roaming Guinea Fowl to control insects and no harmful sprays all assist to grow balanced vines. Vineyard philosophy employed includes rigorous programme of heavy pruning, minimal irrigation and low cropping in order to increase the fruit quality of the vineyard.
