Overview

The 2001 Smithbrook Botrytis Semillon is a serious style of botrytis, somewhat atypical to the often overtly sweet examples that are found in Australia. The freshness of apple and guava is apparent on the nose, whilst the palate shows some nice viscosity with concentrated orange marmalade and grapefruit tang.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2001 growing season in Pemberton was one of the warmest and driest on record. An earlier than average vintage resulted, allowing the late ripening Semillon grapes on one of Smithbrook’s nearby vineyards to achieve a decent level of ripeness before succumbing to a fairly widespread infection of botrytis after some mid-vintage rain. A section of the Semillon block protected by the nearby Karri Gum forest was selected as the preferred section to monitor over the weeks that followed. With the vineyard also situated at the bottom end of a small valley, misty mornings were the norm, but by late morning the sun had usually taken over to provide the ideal combination for botrytis development and grape berry concentration. Leaving the fruit out on the vine for as long as possible, eventually the botrytised bunches were selectively handpicked over several days, giving us a nice mix of heavily botrytised flavours as well as some fresher fruit characters from the individual berries that had escaped infection.

Whole fruit loading into the press and a long slow press cycle were used to extract all of the precious juice, providing us with an average sugar density of about 17 Baume. After a long cold settling, the clean juice was fermented in stainless steel, a slow process that took many months, prior to a maturation period in 1 year old French oak barriques for nearly three years.

The long rolling aftertaste is accentuated with nice creaminess and vanilla oak. Whilst it seems tradition to drink a botrytis wine with a sweet dessert, we strongly recommend trying ours with some quality pate, maybe even as an entrée.
