Expert Reviews

A classic traditional Australian riesling, pale in colour with a faintly yeasty, crisp lemon and apple scent and a clean, dry but smooth palate. Bracing and balanced, it has terrific intensity, line and length. Superb drinking now and to at least 2020.Rating 93 - Huon Hooke, Sydney Morning Herald (22/MAR/2011)

With the 2010 vintage outstanding for Eden Valley Riesling, it makes perfect sense that the Henschke family has turned out a stunner. Julius opens pure and spicy on the nose with smells of citrus, lemongrass, ginger and summer flowers, while in the mouth theres terrific intensity of limey fruit, ample framework and terrific line and length.Matt Skinner, Sunday AGE (05/DEC/2010)

Named after ancestor artist and sculptor Julius Henschke, this comes from a single-vineyard site, planted on sandy loam over gravel and bedrock, ideal for white grapes. A near-perfect evocation of the Eden Valley, with an almost wanton display of lime, lemon and a whiff of passionfruit; the line and length are of the highest quality, the citrussy acidity of the finish likewise.Rating 96 - James Halliday, Weekend Australian (13/NOV/2010)

This years Julius shows all the classic bath powder fragrance and minerals of the Eden Valley and plenty of breezy fresh citrus. The palates fine and crisp acid crunch and a long, crisp finish.Rating 93 - Nick Stock, WBM (01/NOV/2010)

Henschkes wine leans more to rieslings floral side, with a slightly rounder, softer palate than the Clare version. But its a wine of great depth and with proven cellaring potential.

Chris Shanahan Sunday Canberra Times(19/SEP/2010)

Very fresh and reserved, this riesling is beautifully made, expressing the florals and acidity of Eden Valley very eloquently.Outstanding - Lester Jesberg, Winewise (01/NOV/2010)

Brand Profile Image

Henschke is one of the longest established family names in the Barossa and the Australian wine industry. Johann Christian Henschke first planted vines in Keyneton in 1861, producing his first commercial vintage in 1868.

The tradition of quality winemaking has passed down through the generations – today seeing Stephen Henschke and his wife, Prue, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively.

Awarded "International Red Winemaker of the Year" in 1996 at the London Wine Show, Stephen and Prue were in 2006, awarded Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine's "Winemaker of the Year" in recognition of winemaking excellence in both red and white wines. These Awards recognise the consistent and continuing success of this remarkable couple.

Prue has, for the last 18 years, explored and now employs both organic and biodynamic strategies to maximise the potential for the fruit from these unique vineyards to fully express their individual terroirs.
