Concentrated, rich dark berry fruits with soft, ripe tannins and balanced acidity keeping the structure together. Long and quite elegant.
"The workhorse shiraz for Pikes, this has a nice sense of generous flavours matched with smooth, balanced structure. The nose smells of red- and blue-berry compote – some really attractive, bright fragrance here, really fresh. The palate’s soft tannins roll through effortlessly, delivering ripe-plum and blackberry flavours. Ready to drink. "
Rating 92 - Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide 2012
Colour
Deep red – almost black
Aroma
Ripe blueberry, plum and black cherry fruit with some dark chocolate and graphite notes as well. These are all complimented by a touch of charry French oak in the background mix.
Palate
The palate is soft, juicy and bright with flavours of blueberry and plum dominating the charry French oak and core of dark chocolate running through the mid palate. Fine tannins on the finish add length and a structure to the ripe, plush fruit.
Cellaring Potential
A really nice example of medium bodied Clare Valley Shiraz. No problem to enjoy this wine in its youth, but as usual 4-7+ years will see some development occur in the wine and amply repay those who like more complex, aged characters in their reds.
Food Matching
Roast lamb is a good match.
Pikes Vintners is an iconic family owned and operated winery set amongst the hills and valleys of South Australia's beautiful Clare Valley.
Established in 1984 the winery and vineyards are situated in the historic and picturesque Polish Hill River sub region on the eastern side of the Clare Valley. The climate in this area is cooler and the soils are quite different compared to the rest of the region, imparting distinctive flavours and aromas to the wines.
Pikes is best known for its world class Riesling, but is becoming increasingly recognized for high quality, elegant red wines and their ever popular Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend. Pikes have also been a leader in planting new and alternative varieties to the district including Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio and Viognier. Pikes also produces Pikes Oakbank- a sparkling Pilsener style beer.
The distinctive English Pike fish appears on all Pikes products.
