"Rustic reds and Italy go hand in hand and this is where Pikes have tried to emulate the style coming out of Italy with a modern twist. Yes, there's that savoury edge and wild herb aromas from the Sangiovese component, but to make the wine a much more approachable, riper and easier drinking style, the winery has added a small amount of Merlot and Cabernet to give the wine added softness and structure resulting in a medium bodied wine redolent with ripe, bright cherry fruit flavours, and smooth gentle tannins." Jon Helmer, Surf Coast & Bellarine Times (21/Sep/2010 )
"Has the light colour expected of sangiovese, but the hue is still red; the light-bodied wine has distinct sour cherry aromas that are reflected on the light palate, the other two varieties making no impact." Rating 89 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011
Winery Tasting Notes
Medium density, bright red.
Typical dusty, dark cherry and dried flowers plus some subtle oak aromas deliver an enticing amalgam of aromas. Quite perfumed really.
Again this is absolutely typical of this noble Tuscan variety. Medium weight cherry fruit, bright acid and firm, dry tannins form a structure that could only point towards the Sangiovese grape.
Assisted by small percentages of Merlot and Cabernet this wine screams out for food. Anything Italian will do – from your favourite pizza to pasta marinara. It will work wonderfully well.
