Overview

For our 2009 release, we have renamed this wine Syrah as our style is more closely aligned to the cool peppery style from northern Rhône in France. The fruit for this wine comes from the Yarra Valley and the Pyrenees region in central Victoria. Fruit is hand picked, cold soaked pre-fermentation and undergoes whole berry ferments. Very gentle, very loved - just like the style of the wine it later becomes.

Expert Reviews

Strong purple-crimson; generous and vibrant black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit from Victorian vineyards not affected by bushfire smoke taint; juicy, but at the same time has very good structure. Drink to 2020. Rating 93 - James Halliday, Aaustralian Wine Companion online (7/MAR/2011)

Innocent Bystander is the second label of Giant Steps Winery, located at Healesville in Victorias Yarra Valley. The appellation Victoria simply indicates sourcing from a number of Victorian regions – presumably cooler ones by the style of this very attractive shiraz. If the deep, crimson colour suggests a burly wine, the spicy, savoury aroma immediately points the other way. The palate supports this message with its savoury, slightly funky flavours, and supple, fine-textured, soft tannins - complexities and textures consistent with wild-yeast fermentation in open vats, whole bunches in the ferments and extend pre-fermentation maceration.Chris Shanahan, Sunday Canberra Times, (24/APR/2011)

There’s mulberry and plum on the nose and palate of this tasty red, with restrained oak and fine tannins on the finish.Rating 90 - Mike Frost, Courier Mail (29/APR/2011)

Winemaking Note

There is a sea of fantastic Shiraz made in this country but the lion's share comes from the warmer winemaking regions of South Australia. These styles are big, juicy, often slightly jammy and a reputation for high levels of alcohol.
