Expert Reviews

"The Petaluma winemakers say they tried not to interfere much in the making of the Bridgewater Mill pinot gris “preferring to let the clean, juicy fruit do the talking. Pervasive pear aromas precede a palate both fruity and lively with natural acid."

Ross Noble, Mt Barker Courier (25/JAN/2012)

Winery Tasting Notes

Fresh yet complex wine, with delicate floral and honeysuckle notes on the nose, fresh Nashi pear and lemon on the nose.

The 2011 boasts racy natural acid, yet depth of flavour and a gentle viscosity on the palate, imparted from some months of lees stirring in barrel. This slight progression in style is expressed on the label, confirming a change from the previously labelled Pinot Grigio to the new Pinot Gris style.

Winemaking Note

2011 in the cool climate Adelaide Hills region proved to be unusually wet and warm; however our Pinot Gris vines in the sub regions of Lenswood and Piccadilly fared pleasingly well.

The Lenswood fruit was handpicked into small slotted bins and delivered to the Petaluma winery in late March with the Piccadilly fruit picked less than two weeks later, in early April. The fruit was chilled, then gently pressed to ensure that only the finest first run juice was extracted to undergo fermentation. 75% of the juice was run to one and two use French oak barriques in two parcels, using two chosen yeast strains, and the balance underwent fermentation in stainless steel, using aromatic enhancing yeast. These three parcels came together for blending and bottling in September 2011 to produce a fresh yet complex wine.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The sweeping and curving Adelaide Hills in South Australia are home to the cool fresh vineyards that create the Bridgewater Mill wines. Grown on vines up to 25 years old and at a cool 300-450 metres high, Bridgewater Mill wines are finely drawn with taut structures, pure fruit and crisp clean flavours.

The dramatic wine labels originate from a single artwork inspired by the sweeping horizon line of the definitive Adelaide Hills landscape. At the very heart of the Adelaide Hills lies Petaluma’s Cellar Door, the heritage listed Bridgewater Mill, est. 1860.
