Expert Reviews

Wolf Blass (the man) deliberately ignored Coonawarra during his executive winemaking career because he found the texture and flavour of its red wines incompatible with the style he favoured, but times have changed. Deep crimson-purple, it is more savoury and less oaky than anticipated, with a zesty finish and aftertaste to its array of blackcurrant plus Coonawarra's signal of earth and mint. It will sail through to 2020.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

The 2008 Wolf Blass Gold Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is a vibrant purple red.

Aroma

An attractive nose of lifted choc mint and rich fruits of blackcurrants and mulberry with hints of bramble and violets supported by subtle cedary oak.

Palate

Medium to full bodied palate with rich varietal fruit flavours, balanced acidity and silky fruit tannins supported by gentle oak, finishing seamlessly with elegance and length.

Cellaring Potential

Enjoy now or cellar over the next 10 years.

Winemaking Note

Coonawarra's Terra Rossa soil and maritime influenced cool climate is the perfect combination for Cabernet Sauvignon. Each individual block was harvested and fermented separately in small rotary fermenters. The gentle ferments went for 6 to 8 days with occasional aerative pumpovers. After pressing off the skins, the wines were racked into new and seasoned French and American oak to complete malolatic fermentation, before being racked several times and returned to oak. After 14 months maturation, each oak barrel group was tasted and the final blend made up of the barrels that showed exceptional varietal character, silky texture and fine-grained tannins.

Award Winning Winery

Wolf Blass Wines has grown from a humble tin shed to become one of the world's most successful and awarded wineries.

Wolf Blass was created in 1973 when Wolf started his own business, purchasing a 2.5 acre land holding with an old army shed outside Nuriootpa, at the northern end of the Barossa Valley.

In researching the name Bilyara, Wolf learned it was the Aboriginal name for "Eaglehawk" and given the eagle was also the national emblem of Germany, he decided his wines would carry the Eagle - a legacy that continues today and into the future.

Wolf Blass Wines won three consecutive Jimmy Watson Trophies with Black Label, generating substantial publicity and hype. In 1999, Wolf Blass Black Label made history, becoming the only wine to win the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy an unprecedented four times.

From this time onwards, growth has been impressive and inspiring with Wolf Blass winning a grand total of more than 3,000 awards at national and international wine shows, including most recently, International Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2008 International Wine Challenge in London.

Wolf Blass Wines have a tradition of quality, character and consistency from the refined and elite Platinum Label, and the majestic and complex Black Label through to delicate Rieslings and crisp Chardonnays.

"The sum of all parts should still be a better result than the quality of each individual part, otherwise why blend at all" - Chris Hatcher Chief Winemaker.
