Expert Reviews

From a low-yielding vineyard at Greenock and made differently (in some respects) to the other reds; pressed before dryness, fermentation was finished in barrel, 50% new/50% old French oak.

This is a finer wine with the integration of oak that can only be achieved by finishing the fermentation in barrel. There is a spicy intensity to the very long palate, the fruit and oak tannins fused together on the finish.

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

The nose displays black fruits, dark chocolate and brazil nuts and a hint of smoky oak.

Winemaking Note

The 2007 Zeppelin Barossa Valley Shiraz is from a single low yielding vineyard in Greenock. A very simplistic 'hands off' winemaking approach was used with open fermenters pumped over by hand twice daily before basket pressing and fermentation was finished in barrel. Separate parcels were matured in equal parts new and seasoned French oak for 30 months before bottling without fining or filtration.

Winery Profile

Zeppelin was created by “Artisan of the Barossa” winemakers Corey Ryan and Kym Teusner. The wines are made using traditional techniques and a “hands off ” philosophy to create wines full of character. Proud of the region’s German heritage, the brand was named in honour of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin – a brave and progressive man who thought big, really big.

VINEYARDS

Zeppelin is sourced from vineyards either owned by Teusner Wines or Sons of Eden, selected for their age (up to 80 years old), low yielding nature and character. Ferdinand is from a vineyard in Greenock, the Barossa Shiraz in Angaston and the Barossa Grenache is sourced from 60 to 80 year old vines between Greenock and Ebenezer.

WINEMAKING PHILOSOPHY

A very simplistic approach to winemaking, preserving individual vineyard character and making wines with personality. The red wines are made using open fermenters, pumped over by hand, and basket pressed. Predominantly older French oak is used, with Ferdinand up to 50% new, before bottling without fining or filtration. Minimal sulphur added.
