Winery Tasting Notes

Grape Varietal

65% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc

Aroma

Noticeably more restrained and less fruit driven than the 2008 Bordeaux Superior with a nose that leans more towards forest floor, dried spice and toasted oak complexity.

Palate

The palate is less opulent but equally intense with effortless fruit power. Long and linear in nature, the precision and structure of the finish indicate medium to long term cellaring potential.

Vintage Condition

In keeping with most of France, 2008 followed 2007 as a difficult vintage saved from a cold and wet summer by warm and dry conditions in September and October. The combination of frost, difficult conditions during flowering and the cool summer resulted in very small yields. The warm late harvest conditions allowed vigilant and patient vignerons to make surprising wines in 2008.

Winemaking Note

The fruit is harvested by hand before a full de-stalking. A cold maceration is followed by a cool fermentation in open vats with gentle cap punching before finishing in stainless steel. The wine is matured in a mixture of 2 and 3 year French oak barrels.

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Saint-Emilion is the most important appellation in the right bank of Bordeaux, where Merlot and Cabernet Franc play more important role than Cabernet Sauvignon. It covers nine communies, with three distinct groups of vineyards on differing soils.

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is the most prestigious wines of the region, They are made with great care from low-yielding vineyards and are usually aged in expensive new French oak. The wines have rich tannins and complex red berry fruit aromas, developing tobacco and cedar nuances as they evolves.

Winery Profile

Durandal was created by the Malet Roquefort family as a modern and expressive champion of St. Emilion’s famed Merlot Cabernet Franc wine style. A counter point to the refined and structured estate wines, Durandal is approachable and richly flavoured but with suitable tannins to reward cellaring.

Vineyard

Mature, low yielding vineyards situated on the lower slopes of St. Emilion and planted primarily to Merlot, followed by Cabernet Franc and small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon.
