Well-ripened Shiraz and Grenache blend together well to give a wine of great structure and flavour. Mourvèdre, originally a Spanish grape variety, is well suited to blending with Shiraz as it adds weight and fleshiness to the wine.
Grape Varietals
Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre.
Viticulture
Back in the 1950's and 1960's one of the traditional Quelltaler Estate dry reds was a blend of these three varieties, which are so often referred to as the "Rhône varieties".
This relates to their use in the French Rhône region. Well-ripened Shiraz and Grenache blend together well to give a wine of great structure and flavour. Mourvèdre, originally a Spanish grape variety, is well suited to blending with Shiraz as it adds weight and fleshiness to the wine.
Winemaking Notes
Each parcel of fruit was fermented individually for 14 days in 4-tonne open fermenters. They were then pressed using a traditional basket press, before undergoing maturation in a combination of seasoned French and American oak for 18 months.
The renowned Clare Valley is the home of Annie's Lane.
Annie's Lane wines were launched in 1996, named after a real place and a real person.
Anne's Lane was so-named at the turn of the 20th century when Annie Wayman's horse and cart got bogged along the boundary of a Clare Valley vineyard, as she delivered lunch and warm drinks to pruners in the vineyard. So, it seemed only reasonable that Annie, a stalwart of Clare Valley folklore, should be remembered for her inimitable services to the vineyard workers of the region.
The home of Annie's Lane is the heritage listed Quelltaler winery at the heart of Watervale, in the Clare Valley's south. Quelltaler is the regions oldest and most important wineries, dating back to 1863.
Annie's Lane is now one of the finest wineries in Australia's renowned Clare Valley and is known for crafting a range of reputable wines from some of the oldest vines in the region.
The Annie's Lane wines rely on regional and varietal expression; encompassing a diversity of wines from elegant fresh white to rich, fruit-flavoured reds. Annie's Lane features a core Clare Valley range of wines as well as a limited release range of ultra-premium wines released under the Copper Trail label.
The most successful of all the wines has been the super-premium Copper Trail Shiraz - awarded Visy's Great Australian Shiraz Challenge and overall category winner for best Shiraz in Winestate Magazine's World's Greatest Shiraz Challenge for the Copper Trail Shiraz 2005.
