Wine Background

"The Copper Trail" was a route forged by prospectors following the discovery of copper at Burra in the late 1840's. The Copper Trail passed through the Clare Valley just south of Watervale.

Annie's Lane Copper Trail Riesling is sourced entirely from the Clare Valley in South Australia. Clare Valley is renowned for producing some of Australia's most renowned Riesling. Drought conditions resulted in average yields for Riesling, with a large berry size that provided lower phenolics due to a good juice to skin ratio. Spring was frost free while summer was moderate. An unseasonally cool February allowed optimum ripening conditions for maximum flavour intensity while the cool nights provided acid retention. Early March saw one of the longest heat waves in Australian history but fortunately all the premium Riesling blocks had been picked.

Winemaking Notes

The fruit was hand picked then gently pressed and only the delicate free run juice retained. It then underwent a cool ferment to enhance the fruit characters, before being bottled early under screw cap to retain the delicate fruit flavours.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The renowned Clare Valley is the home of Annie's Lane.

Annie's Lane wines were launched in 1996, named after a real place and a real person.

Anne's Lane was so-named at the turn of the 20th century when Annie Wayman's horse and cart got bogged along the boundary of a Clare Valley vineyard, as she delivered lunch and warm drinks to pruners in the vineyard. So, it seemed only reasonable that Annie, a stalwart of Clare Valley folklore, should be remembered for her inimitable services to the vineyard workers of the region.

The home of Annie's Lane is the heritage listed Quelltaler winery at the heart of Watervale, in the Clare Valley's south. Quelltaler is the regions oldest and most important wineries, dating back to 1863.

Annie's Lane is now one of the finest wineries in Australia's renowned Clare Valley and is known for crafting a range of reputable wines from some of the oldest vines in the region.

The Annie's Lane wines rely on regional and varietal expression; encompassing a diversity of wines from elegant fresh white to rich, fruit-flavoured reds. Annie's Lane features a core Clare Valley range of wines as well as a limited release range of ultra-premium wines released under the Copper Trail label.

The most successful of all the wines has been the super-premium Copper Trail Shiraz - awarded Visy's Great Australian Shiraz Challenge and overall category winner for best Shiraz in Winestate Magazine's World's Greatest Shiraz Challenge for the Copper Trail Shiraz 2005.
