Expert Reviews

4 Stars & Best Wine of 2008. Ripe cherries and vibrant chocolatey aromas followed by a lovely tobacco like palate with very good fruit and firm tannins. Quite Rhone-like. Winestate Annual 2009 Jan-09

4.5 Stars / 94 Points. Another wine to joining the growing band of brooding, spicy Yarra shiraz, this has an earthy dark beetroot nose, ripe dark plum fruits, gentle spice and pipe tobacco; it opens with air. The palate starts out with some sweet cinmon and eastern spices across the bright red fruit flavour, supported with plenty of taut fine tannin, balanced, savoury and moody. 4 Stars. "Ripe cherries and vibrant chocolatey aromas followed by a lovely tobacco like palate with very good fruit and firm tannins. Quite Rhone-like." Winestate (Australia), September 2008

5 Stars / 93 Points. "An irresistible meaty, spicy-fruit and toasty-oak melange greets the nose, almost jammy blackberry as well. This is gorgeously decadent, sexy red wine in classic northern Rhone style. Succulent, sweet-fruited, understated." Gourmet Traveller WINE, Huon Hooke (Australia), April 08

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Yarra Valley based vignerons, the Sexton family live in the middle of their 80 acre vineyard established on the high north face of the Warramate Ranges in the dress circle of the Yarra Valley, one hour east of Melbourne.

At Giant Steps, they explore site, micro climatic and clonal differences between several specialised vineyards in the Yarra Valley including their own multiclonal vineyard and the highly regarded Tarraford vineyard.

Focused intently upon reflecting the individual and unique characteristics of each single vineyard, Giant Steps adopts a minimalist approach to winemaking including, whenever possible, vinification using indigenous yeasts and gravity flow transfers.

When in the Yarra Valley you must stop by the winery/cellar door situated in the main street of Healesville, which offers wood fired pizzas, in-house roasted coffee, cheese, beer on tap, and of course wine.
