4.5 Stars

"Lighter style smelling of plums and mulberries and some obvious oak. Supple palate with very fine and gentle fruit flavours, complementary oak and fine, long tannins in support."

Travel & Living, Winsor Dobbin (Australia), 01 Jan 10

"Pinot noir thrives in the Yarra and this wine shines with its pure pinosity. It has great balance with some gorgeous cherry and dark plum fruit characters matched by some savoury, mushroomy and toasty oak attributes on the palate. Great attention was paid to the vines which are managed biodynamically, and the grapes were hand-picked and open fermented before being matured in French oak. A serious wine that will improve over the next couple of years."

Sunday Times, Peter Forrestal (Australia), 06 Dec 09

"A classy single vineyard pinot from Phil Sexton and the team in the Yarra: rich, briar and mulberry flavours, silky smooth texture. Delectable."

The Australian Wine Annual 2010, Jeremy Oliver (Australia, New Zealand), 01 Oct 09

Vintage: 2008

88 Points

"A meaty, rather savoury pinot whose slightly candied flavours of raspberries, strawberries. Plums and cherries are knit with fresh vanilla oak and backed by a suggestion of marzipan. It’s presently rather raw, a little hollow and lacking finesse, and while it’s underpinned by smooth, polished tannins, it could use more weight and structure."

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Yarra Valley based vignerons, the Sexton family live in the middle of their 80 acre vineyard established on the high north face of the Warramate Ranges in the dress circle of the Yarra Valley, one hour east of Melbourne.

At Giant Steps, they explore site, micro climatic and clonal differences between several specialised vineyards in the Yarra Valley including their own multiclonal vineyard and the highly regarded Tarraford vineyard.

Focused intently upon reflecting the individual and unique characteristics of each single vineyard, Giant Steps adopts a minimalist approach to winemaking including, whenever possible, vinification using indigenous yeasts and gravity flow transfers.

When in the Yarra Valley you must stop by the winery/cellar door situated in the main street of Healesville, which offers wood fired pizzas, in-house roasted coffee, cheese, beer on tap, and of course wine.
