Expert Reviews

4 Stars "The wine is cherry red and has scents of violets. The front of the palate showcases fleshy raspberry flavour and elements of spice, anise and savoury oak marry on the middle palate." Newcastle Herald, John Lewis (Australia), 20 May 09

"In a big glass this relatively inexpensive pinot offers olfactory thrills. With maraschino cherries, violets, spice and plenty of depth, its an attractive wine to sniff and savour but also goes very nicely at the table. . . " Sydney Morning Herald, Greg Duncan Powell (Australia), 28 Mar 09

"With a luscious mouthfeel, this wine has mint, cherries and raspberries on the nose and delicious red fruit flavours. It is clean and simple with good length." tiol Liquor News (Australia), December 2008

Winery Tasting Notes

Our DEBUT series of ready to drink wines are desingned to present the optimal fruit characters from each variety of grape, grown in its most suitable vineyards in cool climate Western Australia.

This elegant wine was made using traditional vinification techniques including whole bunch fermentation, extended skin contact and barrel fermentation, all of which add to its complexity. This wine displays classic Pinot flavours reminiscent of cherries and wild strawberries with undertones of satsuma plums. The distinct middle palate persists to give a long and satisfying finish. Debut wines are made to provide excellent drinking at the time of release. This wine will gain further in complexity with one to four years in bottle.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Capel Vale was established in 1974 by Sydney radiologist Dr Peter Pratten and his wife Elizabeth when they purchased land on the Capel River between Bunbury and Busselton in Western Australia’s South-West.

The site was originally a stone fruit orchard and its rich red alluvial loam soils over limestone made it a perfect viticultural site. It is also the location for the winery, cellar door and award winning restaurant.

After several vintages, it became apparent to Peter Pratten that the soils of the Capel area (now recognised as the Geographe region) were best suited to Chardonnay and Merlot. It became Peter's passion to determine the best region in South Western Australia for each premium grape variety. As a result Capel Vale has invested in prime viticultural land in Mount Barker for the production of Shiraz and Riesling, in Pemberton for Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc and in Margaret River for Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.
