Overview

Our Sauvignon Blanc ‘Petraea’ is named for the species of oak used in French wine barrels. For over a decade Nepenthe has been a leader in Sauvignon Blanc in Australia. We continuously look to innovate and improve our wines and the Petraea represents the next step in Sauvignon Blanc for us. The wine is matured in large format French oak creating a style that is rich, powerful and textured. Petraea is a wine for food, a wine for special occasions, its Sauvignon Blanc with a difference.

Expert Reviews

The wine spent 6 months in a 2500l French cask, sufficient to make 275 dozen. It's a pity there isn't more, for this is a really attractive and complex wine; there is an intense mix of citrus (grapefruit and lemon) flavours on the one hand and tropical fruits (notably passionfruit and gooseberry) on the other; the oak provides texture rather than flavour, and the length of the palate reflects this.Rating 94 -James Halliday, 28 July 2014.

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

A subtle, complex bouquet of passion fruit and gooseberry with toasted oak characters from oak aging and hints of roasted capsicum.

Palate

The palate if the Petraea is characterised by texture, complexity and length. Tropical flavours mix with fresh, grassy characters which are complemented by a generous creamy palate weight and a good acid backbone.

Cellaring

3-5 years.

Food Pairing

Enjoy the Petraea with oily fish such as Salmon or tuna, rich chicken dishes and Sushi. It will also match well to lighter cheese such as fresh mozzarella, haloumi and fetta.

Winery Profile

5 Red Star Winery - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2014

Nepenthe quickly established its reputation as a producer of high quality wines, but when founder Ed Tweddell died unexpectedly in 2006, the business was purchased by McGuigan Simeon the following year. The winery was closed in 09, and winemaking operations transferred to Australian Vintage, McGuigan Simeons principal SA winery. (The Nepenthe winery has since been purchased by Peter Leske and Mark Kozned, and provides contract winemaking services via their Revenir venture.) Nepenthe has over 100ha of close-planted vineyards spread over four vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, with an exotic array of varieties. Exports to the UK, the US and other major markets.James Halliday
