Overview

Passionate admirer of fine Pinot Noir and Patriarch of Nepenthe, Dr Ed Tweddell, derived great pleasure from our Pinot. His untimely passing in 2005 cut short that enjoyment, but we continue his legacy with an unswerving commitment to making fine Pinot Noir in his name. Pinot noir is suited to high altitude (i.e. cool), low-vigour sites in the central Hills. All fruit is hand-picked and rapidly transported to the winery where fermentation occurs. After pressing the wine is allowed to settle for 24 hours, and then racked to French oak barrels with the balance made up of 1 to 2 year old barrels. Intensive barrel tasting and selection is undertaken to ensure only the best are selected for the Good Doctor.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep garnet red. The depth of colour is a reflection of the warm vintage conditions and a

hint of the power to come.

Aroma

The nose is initially quite herbal, a hallmark of this variety. Dried herbs and mint are the flavours that arise first but upon looking deeper, raspberry and cherry flavours become apparent. Expect the herbal aromatics to develop in time into forest floor complexity.

Palate

The Pinnacle wines are always true expressions of their vintage and the 2012 Good Doctor is no exception. The palate is rich and powerful with bright herbal tones matched by delightful strawberry and black cherry characters. The wine has firm ripe tannins that will mellow over the next five years, building complexity and a soft mouth feel.

Cellaring

This wine will happily gather complexity and interest over 5–6 years in bottle

Nepenthe quickly established its reputation as a producer of high quality wines, but when founder Ed Tweddell died unexpectedly in 2006, the business was purchased by McGuigan Simeon the following year. The winery was closed in 09, and winemaking operations transferred to Australian Vintage, McGuigan Simeons principal SA winery. (The Nepenthe winery has since been purchased by Peter Leske and Mark Kozned, and provides contract winemaking services via their Revenir venture.) Nepenthe has over 100ha of close-planted vineyards spread over four vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, with an exotic array of varieties.
