Expert Reviews

Cabernet doesn't always shine in the Barossa Valley as well as it does here, particularly if your perception is bedded in cool Aus regions; here savoury tannins run through blackcurrant fruit, with touches of forest, leaf and leather all hanging together well. Rating 94 - Drink by 2027 - James HAlliday, Australian Wine Companion (AUG/2014)

Winery Tasting Notes

Instantly identifiable as a Cabernet Sauvignon with varietal aromas of blackberry leaf and bright purple fruits alongside subtle flinty notes.

The cooler conditions of this wine have been favorable to this variety with a balanced palate that opens with berries before finishing with spicy cinnamon, clove and nutmeg flavours. All the while, a lovely powdery tannins coat the mouth and linger finish.

Food Matching

A medium-bodied Cabernet that will marry excellently with a char-grilled steak. If hankering for something different, enjoy this with slow cooked pulled pork or lamb shanks. Roasted pumpkin and mushroom pie or a medium spicy Indian curry will do very well too. Hard, bitey cheese are best with The Reward.

Enjoy this classic Barossa Cabernet now, but watch it develop further over the next ten years. Decanting for two hours prior to serving is recommended.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In the heart of the Barossa Valley, Australia’s best known wine region, lies St Hallett, one of the country’s premier wine producers. Established by the Lindner Family in 1944, for many years St Hallett’s winemaking focus was, like many local wineries, on producing fortified wines. However during the seventies and eighties St Hallett turned to explore the true potential of the Barossa through premium table wines. This has resulted in St Hallett’s elevation as one of Australia’s best producers.

St Hallett is renowned for crafting full-flavored, textured wines entirely from Barossa Valley fruit and is credited with producing benchmark wines of the region such as the iconic St Hallett Old Block Shiraz, made from vines aged up to 100 years old.
