Expert Reviews

The mighty Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon is a more elegant creature nowadays. Less suited to the “offline”; more suited to a luncheon. This release won’t knock anyone between the eyes but it will seduce regardless. It prefers to do you slowly. It’s soft, medium-weight, seamless and curranty, with fresh herbs and mints lifting through tobacco/undergrowth/cedarwood. Tannin is a fine, integrated art. The finish is prolonged. Rating 94 - Drink by 2030, Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au (NOV/2015).

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

Deep complex and intense black currant, rolled tobacco, violets, wet slate, dutch cocao, iodine and wild thyme.

Palate

Powerful and intense with a deep concentrated marriage of fruit flavours including red and black currants, liquorice and courveture. The characteristic fine yet firm structural tannins frame the fruit perfectly and carry the flavours and balance the mineral elements from the vineyard to provide an incredibly long and classically structured finish.

Food Matching

Roasted rack of lamb, parsnips, carrots and rosemary served on Paris mash with a Cabernet jus.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Cape Mentelle is a founding winery of Margaret River, established in 1970. One of the most remote wine regions in the world located in the south west corner of Australia, its natural beauty with spectacular coastlines captivates visitors. Here the maritime influence of the Indian Ocean ensures even temperatures, providing consistently excellent vintage conditions.

Cape Mentelle pioneered many of the region’s renowned wine styles and today is a benchmark for the quality of the region’s wines. Accolades including consecutive wins of Australia’s most prestigious wine trophy with the iconic Cabernet Sauvignon in 1983 and 1984, helped put Margaret River on the international wine map.

Building on the winery’s tradition of pioneering spirit and uncompromising commitment to excellence, an innovative young team is taking up the challenge to be simply the best.
