A world class blend in the Bordeaux tradition. The earth offers it up and we respect the gift.

Apalta is located 170 kilometers south west of Santiago in the Colchagua Valley. The vineyard is situated on a north to south exposure, which is quite rare in Chile. The Tinguiririca river rests on one side and the hills from the coastal Cordillera surround the vineyard like a horseshoe on the other. They are both integral in forming this unique terroir. This geography is responsible for the conditions that ensure balance for our vines and a slow ripening for the grapes. At sunrise and sunset, the Cordillera block the sun’s rays, limiting the vines exposure to intense sunshine and the river has a cooling influence on the climate.

"When I first came to Apalta it striked me; unique geography, climate and old vines that are not grafted. The potential that lay hidden in this incredible place came to reality with the creation of Clos Apalta.” - Jacques Begarie, Chief Winemaker

Expert Reviews

"Big and rich, this red is filled with powerful flavors of blackberry, dark currant, black olive and dark chocolate that are built on an ironclad frame. Notes of cocoa powder and cream chime in as well, and the muscular finish lingers with hints of savory herb. Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2014 through 2022."Rating 94 Wine Spectator

An intense and youthful ruby red colour (with tinges of violet) in the glass, this 2010 “Clos Apalta” from the Lapostolle winery offers a wonderfully complex and exuberant set of aromas as it is approached. There are notes reminiscent of dark cherries, ripe plums and mint leaf, set alongside vanilla, clove spices and a hint of fig. Wafting and expressive, the bouquet of this 2010 “Clos Apalta” manages to be both complex and approachable.

Smooth and full-bodied in style when tasted, this 2010 “Clos Apalta” is a lithe fruit compote composed of flavours of mixed cherries, blueberries and plums with the vanilla, clove and mint leaf notes evident on the nose emerging (along with a hint of milk chocolate) as it develops on the tongue. For a young wine the tannins are impressively rounded and unobtrusive and whilst this 2010 “Clos Apalta” could easily become overcome by its fruitiness were there not sufficient acidity, there’s a nice clean length finish to finish as it fades.

Not as high scoring as the 2009 iteration this 2010 “Clos Apalta” from Lapostolle nonetheless remains massively accomplished and could be drunk now or cellared through to 2020.Rating 93 - Independent Wine Review (JUL/2013)
