Krug Clos du Mesnil, a very rare Champagne, showcases the unique character of a single plot of Chardonnay, harvested in a single year. Our 1.84-hectare vineyard overlooked by the village church has been protected by walls since 1698. The vineyard is located in the heart of Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most iconic villages for Chardonnay in the Champagne region. Krug Clos du Mesnil has an expansive generous personality enhanced by the finish which powers through with extreme precision.

Expert Reviews

The 2000 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil is rich, deep, textured and wonderfully complete. The seductiveness of the 2000 vintage comes through beautifully, but the Mesnil has extra dimensions of depth that aren’t found in the Vintage. Smoke, ash, graphite, pastry and lemon are some of the nuances that unfold in this supremely gracious, refined Clos du Mesnil. I expect the 2000 to take some time to reach its peak, but it is superb, even at this early stage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035. Rating 95 - Drink 2015 - 2035 - Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate (NOV/2011)

There was no heatwave in 2000 but overall the summer was quite warm. This will be the next Clos du Mesnil to be released, but actually I found it a little more generous on the palate than the 1998, even if less developed on the nose. More discreet nose but impressively introvert. Broad on the palate but still very dry on the finish. Austere at the moment but very promising. Rating 18.5 - Drink to 2022, Jancis Robinson MW, (NOV/2011)

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Small but important Champagne house founded in Rheims in 1843 by Johann-Joseph Krug, who was born in Mainz, Germany, in 1800. By 1893 the firm occupied its current modest cellars, around whose courtyard the Krug family still live. Krug does not make an ordinary non-vintage champagne but specializes exclusively in prestige cuvées, of which the multi-vintage Grande Cuvée is the flagship. Consistently producing champagne that is among the most admired in its region of origin, Krug is the only house to persist in barrel fermentation of its entire production of base wine, in old 205-l/54-gal casks. Wines from at least six and sometimes nine different vintages make up the blend for Grande Cuvée, one of the most distinctive and long lived of champagnes. Grande Cuvée, with new packaging and a special bottle, succeeded the rather fuller-bodied Private Cuvée as Krug's most important product in 1979. In 1971, Krug acquired and replanted the Clos du Mesnil, a walled vineyard of less than 2 ha/5 acres. Its Chardonnay grapes provide one of Champagne's very few single-vineyard, or cru, wines of which the 1979 vintage was the first. Small quantities of the finest vintage Krug are released as Krug Collection about ten years after their initial release. Although the firm is run by members of the fifth and sixth generation of champagne-making Krugs, it has been owned by LVMH since 1999.
