The Bay of Fires wines were born of a desire to showcase the best possible cool climate varietal wines Tasmania can offer, combining fruit intensity, refinement and persistence of flavour. The 2013 Pinot Noir represents the continued evolution of this wine as we explore and develop vineyard resources. Our philosophy is to nurture elegance and develop ripe flavour profiles.
Colour
Brilliant deep purple in colour.
Aroma
This wine displays complex aromas of sweet ripe red berry fruits with star anise, cinnamon spices and floral nuances.
Palate
Although elegant and supple, this wine shows remarkable power, intensity and length on the palate. Framed by ripe, moderate tannin, the graceful sweet strawberry fruit is complemented but not dominated by spice. Overall the wine has wonderful poise and balance with remarkable length of flavour as all great Pinot Noirs should.
Viticulture
Out of extraordinary challenges, come exceptional results.
It's no easy task growing vines in Tasmania – it requires lots of passion, hard work, commitment and knowledge. But from the vineyards nurtured with these four qualities comes truly remarkable fruit and the Bay of Fires range of wines.
Our vines enjoy a cool, maritime climate that provides steadier ripening conditions, however, with it come the challenges of lower sunlight levels and a greater variation in terroir – the very complexities that spur on our determination.
All the vines are painstakingly pruned and trellised in the single cordon vertical shoot (Guyot) technique to protect them against the elements that are as fickle as the winds that carry them.
Just like the sub-regions of our island state, every vineyard has a unique and distinctive character forged out of its soil, its climate and of course its careful management. So we believe it is our job then to bring together an entire team, all of whom ensure the varietal characteristics are revealed, preserved and celebrated in every wine we create for you.
Winemaking
Find balance and beauty will follow.
When so much has gone into growing excellent fruit, it then falls on the winemaking team to capture that quality by creating exceptional wines.
Across the entire team we share our ideas, our knowledge and our curiosity to bring out the best in every parcel of fruit. We balance acidity against sweetness to create delicate Rieslings. In our Chardonnay we seek a harmony of mouthfeel and fruit, and of course then there’s the Pinot Noir – a challenging grape to grow but one which amplifies its terroir beautifully and delivers a wine of superb complexity, structure and romance.
In balance with the qualities of each variety, we strive to echo the terroir, and the essence of Tasmania. It's winemaking 'on the edge', but in the face of such challenges the rewards speak for themselves.
