Expert Reviews

This has locked in at a consistently high quality, with freshness cast against complexity and richness, toasted woody spices and plenty of grilled nuts on show. Almost earthy at times, it has a complex and complete style. The palate is intense and rich: plenty of assertive pinot noir flavour, with deeper reserve-wine flavours of toast and mocha added in through the finish. Rating 93 - Nick Stock, The Age/Sydney Morning Herald Good Wine Guide 2011

Typical Bollinger rich toasted woody spices and grilled nuts, almost earthy at times. It has a similarly rich palate with brazen fruit flavour, mocha and roasted coffee to close. Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller WINE (01/DEC/2009)

"... very rich and complex, with pronounced biscuity/creamy textures and flavours before moving through to a fine finish." Rating 94 - James Halliday, Weekend Australian (14/NOV/2009)

"A new disgorgement from very clean, pure 2004 base material (look for the new label) this wine displays Bollinger’s initiatives to suppress oxidation, creating a fresher, less aldehydic style. It’s still classic Bolly, packed with lemon zest, vanilla and dried fruits. Outstanding." Rating 95 - Tyson Stelzer, Wine Business Monthly (MAY/2009)

"Theres been a change in Bollinger NV over recent years more freshness, less aldehydic influence. The result is still an excellent, traditional style, rich and opulent. Special Cuvee has toffee apple, bread and nutty characters on the nose and woven through a full-flavoured, smooth palate that finishes savoury and zesty...."5 Stars - Ralph Kyte-Powell, Age (26/OCT/2010)

Typical to the style, this is a wine of power, elegance and style. I think recent developments at Bollinger had introduced a new level of freshness and life into this great wine but it still retains that complexity and palate weight that are so distinctive. It’s pinot noir dominant with smaller amounts of chardonnay and pinot meunier. Very long and persistent palate structure.Rating 94 - Ray Jordan, West Australian (05/JUN/2010)

Champagnes producers are keen to ditch the non vintage tag so reps have been in Australia talking this up as a classic “multi vintage... Combining the three great varieties (chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier) this release follows house style with a genuine richness and ripeness, beautifully weighted, fresh and showing terrific character: an excellent MV.Rating 4 Stars - Tony Love (04/MAY/2010)

"... my favourite elegant bubble." Donna Hay (01/JAN/2010)

Remarkable balance between fruit and spice, fresh and spicy. A champagne delight at top level. Rating 01 - Weinwelt (01/DEC/2009)

"This is the most difficult wine to keep consistent every year – as no year is the same. 60% Pinot, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Meunier. It has a biscuity nose and superb effervescent mousse, then delicious acid balance and apples, pears and white flowers up front. Full-bodied, strong and light." (FEB/2009)

"The Bollinger Special Cuvée is always one of the finest of the non-vintage blends. It is a forceful, fuller-bodied style for a non-vintage, which is very much in keeping with the Bollinger style."Rating 91 - (JUL/2008)

Winery Tasting Notes

Grand Crus and Premier Crus

Grapes are sourced from 30 Crus, approximately 75% of which are Bollinger's own vineyard.

80% of these Crus are either Grand Cru or Premier Cru.

On average the blend comprise 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15 Pinot Meunier.

Winemaking Notes

Only the Cuvee (first pressing) is used - in common with all Bollinger wines. First fermentation is done in steel tanks. Follwing second fermentation and lees ageing for at least 3 years, a light dosage of 6-98 grams per litre is added. After disgorgement the wine rests in Bollinger's cellars for at least 3 montsh prior to shipping.

Dry, assertive, and powerful yet with finesse Bollinger Special Cuvee remains consistently an expression of Bollinger and the family's beliefs.
