Overview

Gulf Station is the original pastoral holding of the Bell family who settled in the Yarra Valley in 1864. The site of the De Bortoli Winery was known as the “Summer Paddock”. It had a large dam, held green pasture throughout the dry summer months and was a cool place to be seen drinking premium Yarra Valley wine. The Gulf Station range of wines are made from both estate grown fruit and that of other low yielding, premium Yarra Valley vineyards.

Complex red and dark berry aromas with underlying earth and forest floor characters.

Expert Reviews

"Gulf Station pinot noir has been a star of recent times; as soon as I saw this come in, I ripped the top off it. Tasted this in early (FEB/ (89 points) but it’s fleshed out over the past few months. It still really needs to be decanted to get anywhere near the best from it – it unfurls given time to breathe. I’m now happy to call it a super release. It tastes of red and black cherries with stewy, macerated flavours serving to knit it all together. Earthen, forest floor notes linger in the background. Tannins are leathery in texture and minerally in flavour. And the aftertaste is impressively lengthy for a wine at this price. There’s nothing particularly – or at all – sweet-fruited about this. It’s savoury and tannic, with full stops of mineral. Time will be kind."

Rating 91 - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, (JUL/2011)

"Has to be one of the best pinots under this label. Has a spicy aroma with slightly savoury influences and some rather appealing raspberry and orange

zest influences. The palate is beautifully smooth and delicate with excellent structure. Fine tannins add a decent spine to the light to medium-bodied palate. Well worth a look."

Ray Jordan, West Australian, (JUL/2012)

"Suitably light in body and elegant, this is a pretty, varietally correct Pinot Noir with fruity notes of cranberry and tart cherry accented by shadings of earth and brown sugar. It's silky on the finish, with delicate hints of coffee."

Rating 86 - Harvey Steiman, Wine Spectator, (JUL/2012)

"Has to be one of the best pinots under this label and certainly one of the best in the under-$20 category. Has a spicy aroma with slightly savoury note and some rather appealing raspberry and orange zest influences. The palate is beautifully smooth and delicate with excellent structure. Fine tannins add a decent spine to the light to medium-bodied palate. Well worth a look."

Rating 92 - West Australian, (DEC/2011)

"Pale ruby colored, the 2010 Gulf Station Pinot Noir presents a moderate intensity of warm cranberry, sour cherry and ripe strawberry aromas over delicate notes of underbrush and game. Crisp, light to medium bodied and with a moderate amount of flavor concentration, the palate lends a medium level of chewy tannins and a medium-long, slightly astringent finish. Drink it now to 2013."

Rating 85 - Lisa Perotti-Brown, eRobertParker, (JUN/2011)

"One of the best value pinot noirs around, this elegant wine belies its price tag, due to both the economies of scale and expertise available at De Bortoli's large Yarra outpost. Cherry, spice and blossom meet the nose, while a silky texture, delicate plummy flavour, and a sustained, fragrant finish mark the palate."

Rating 4.5 - Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Age, (MAR/2011)

De Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928. The couple emigrated to Australia from Northern Italy, from mountain villages at the foothills of the Italian Alps, near the historic town of Asolo.

Their son, the energetic and dynamic Deen De Bortoli, (b 1936 – d 2003) expanded and consolidated the business created by his parents. Deen's children established De Bortoli's reputation for premium wine including icon dessert wine Noble One and the Yarra Valley wines.

Italian family values passed down from Vittorio remain core values, there is a culture of hard work, generosity of spirit and of sharing good food, good wine and good times with family and friends.
