Maurice O'Shea is regarded by many as the founding father of the modern Australian wine industry. Upon his return from winemaking studies in France, and with the assistance of his mother Leontine, he purchased the original Mount Pleasant property in 1921. Over the next thirty years, a series of now legendary wines were released by Mount Pleasant, establishing the reputation of the lower Hunter Valley and inspiring future generations of Australian winemakers. Even more remarkably these iconic wines were created under very difficult conditions, wtih no access to electricity or modern winemaking techniques. A master blender and visionary winemaker, often blending Shiraz with Pinot Noir and other varieties, Maurice created a succession of wines named after local landmarks, friends and relatives.
