Expert Reviews

Rating 96 & ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2007

A very complex, round and mouthfilling wine; amazing combination of 38 months in predominantly few French and American oak and low alcohol; cedar, vanilla, mocha and earth, black fruits still there, likewise fine tannins.

"★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Rating", Max Allen, Decanter, 07/02/2007

Elegant complex aromas, evolving gracefully. Classically structured palate. Impressive balance between fruit, tannins and acidity. Good future. Up to 5 years. 5 stars.

"Beautifully balanced", Winsor Dobbin, Golf Magazine

The 2001 vintage was a difficult one in Coonawarra but winemaker Wayne Stehbens still managed to come up trumps with Katnook Estate's flagship red, a regular trophy winner in recent years. There's a big, complex nose on this wine and plenty happening on the palate with rich, powerful and spicy fruit, oak in abundance and some fine, soft tannins. A beautifully balanced wine that will cellar for a decade or more.

"deep complex and long", Decanter

Deceptive beetroot, fantastic. Deep complex and long. Opulent, structure. Top stuff. Juicy and balanced.

"let the wine talk for itself"

Maryann Egan, Donna Hay Magazine

This is the flagship wine of Katnook Estate and the depth and intensity of flavour doesn't let it down. The wine has rich finesse and undeniable cabernet sauvignon characters of leaf and blackcurrant. Keep for 10 years or serve with simple food such as rare roast beef and let the wine talk for itself.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour ::

Intense dark plum with brick red edges.

Aroma ::

A complex, richly layered array of ripe fruit and oak matured tones. Ripe, dusty mulberry and plum fruit are combined with chocolate, light mocha and fine cedar oak maturation characters with a hint of vanilla.

Palate ::

A lush, generously layered palate structure of rich fruit and oak maturation flavours. Spicy plum and dusty mulberry fruit are smoothly woven with sweet vanilla, mocha and chocolate from the long maturation period. Fine, soft tannins extend an intense and persistent finish.
