Pirramimma `Ironstone` Grenache 2014 (6 x 750mL), McLaren Vale, SA.

For our first Ironstone release we hand picked the 70 year old War Horse vineyard, these old gnarly dry grown vines were planted in 1944 by Italian POW's. Due to the two lateral layers of Ironstone, the vines are permanently stressed, thus producing minuscule yields of around a tonne and a half per acre. The small berry, concentrated fruit offered from these vines in 2014 provided us the quality and character to release this wine under our iconic Ironstone label.

Expert Reviews

50% matured in new French puncheons, 50% in used French and American oak, for 18 months. This has the structure that separates McLaren Vale grenache from all others in SA, giving this deliciously pliant wine an almost regal air. The use of so much new French oak was brave, but it's part of that regal DNA. Rating 95 - Drink by 2029 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Date Tasted:

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

This bright vibrant Grenache exhibits a bouquet of red rose, spicy raspberry, pomegranate and black cherry, with hints of subtle nutty cedary oak.

Palate

With the palate delivering raspberry puree, dried cranberry, red currant and nutmeg, intermingled with Christmas pudding and spices.

This stunning wine is balanced by a seam of fine grain, savoury tannins, approachable now with double aeration or will develop under the right cellaring conditions.
