Head Red Shiraz 2014 (12 x 750mL) Barossa Valley, SA.

Head Red Shiraz is a barrel cull from Barossa vineyards including 'The Blonde', 'The Brunette' and ‘The Contrarian’ single vineyard wines. It allows a pre-view of the vintage quality to come and keeps the quality of the Single vineyard wines as high as possible.

The wine always receives 12 months barrel age in predominantly older French hogsheads allowing the vintage and terroir to show clearly. It’s also a chance for me to play with the old adage, 'The whole is greater than the sum of its parts'. Certainly the best value and most traditional wine style of the portfolio.

Expert Reviews

Contains a little Grenache and Mataro, and even some Cabernet Sauvignon, but no Viognier from what I can tell. Good.

Looked a bit stinky and sullen on opening, so I’d advise sploshing it into a decanter, or waiting a year before opening. Either or. It’s a very purple thing and quite meaty and peppery too with dark cherry jam, boysenberry and maybe some fresh raspberry perkiness. Medium bodied, almost crunchy with cranberry acidity, juicy fruit and meaty spicy flavours, grainy tannin and a pretty fresh and punchy finish. Energetic thing, and quite different to your ordinary Barossa Shiraz.
