Douglas Hughes `Series 701` Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (12 x 750mL), SA.

From 1950 until 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon was the king of Barossa wines, selling at a premium of 30 – 67% more than Shiraz. Cabernet vineyards were plentiful and highly sought after for producing rich full, flavoured wines with intensity and firm dry tannins. This wine is from 35 year old vineyards and made in traditional style; a reminder of those great wines from earlier decades.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

The appearance is an opaque inky black with deep indigo hues at the edge of the glass.

Aroma

The primary fruit character is black currant with strong herbaceous elements of capsicum and mint. Well integrated toasty oak compliments with cigar box, cedar wood and tobacco notes. Heady alcohol spirit gives a sweet glycerol complexity.

Palate

The palate has plums and blackcurrant fruit building to a robust mid palate full of herbal, vegetative flavours entwined with typical cedar wood and earthy charred oak, vanilla and spice. The tannins are solid with a fine grained texture giving a firm dry finish. It’s a robust wine with a tight tannin profile and lingering smooth dry finish and delicious aftertaste.

Food Matching

This wine is lovely drinking right now and rewards some gentle breathing before serving. It makes a great match with a juicy steak or roast beef and is delicious with tasty vintage cheese.

Cellaring Potential

During the 1960’s and 70’s Barossa Cabernet dominated the winners list for the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy for best 1 year old red. This wine is made in the same style with stand-out flavour while youthful and the integrity to live for many years with careful cellaring.
